Day Two of Celebrate Freedom ‘08

Day Two of Celebrate Freedom filled with lightenng, love and hope

      <dc:subject>Andrew Palau News</dc:subject>

Festival Director Duffy Johnson filed this report at the close of Celebrate Freedom/Day Two.

As the old saying goes, “lightening doesn’t strike the same place twice.” So we moved the Celebrate Freedom venue and it literally struck again tonight. It seems we had to top last year’s performance of 19 inches of rain in three days for the mud fest called Celebrate Freedom ’07. Unfortunately, for the first time in the 18 year history of the event tonight we had to CANCEL the event due to weather.

With a gigantic storm approaching us with a reported 2 ½ inch sized hail, 60 mph straight line winds, lightening that would surpass our planned firework extravaganza finale, and a path of downed power lines local authorities along with event management canceled our show tonight just before 8 p.m. cst. This was just a few minutes before Luis was scheduled to share the Good News – Andrew was slated to speak later in the evening.

Our staff reacted with seasoned poise and did an amazing job of helping getting hundreds of people into safe shelter. It was amazing to watch our staff handle nervous and frustrated attendees as thousands were displaced from their stadium seats. Despite closing the festival down 3 hours early and a main stage Gospel presentation canceled we were able to share the Good News 7 times in the Livin It and Children’s zone.

A few stories from today

-Jesse Beebe, our children’s chair, sprung into action to give a last minute Gospel presentation as the event was being shut down. A small group were saved including an 11 year old boy, named Jesse as well, who had his faced painted with an American flag. The flag began to smudge as the two Jesse’s shared tears of joy together rejoicing over his salvation.
- A Livin It demo offered some extra thrills and Andrew Palau shared the Gospel. A young lady brought by her boyfriend was overwhelmed by her need for Christ and was truly broken. She prayed today for the first time for Christ to be the Lord of her life.
- We were expecting 60+ Harley’s to ride into our Livin It area today. As the procession approached we soon realized that more than double that number had come. Many of these riders helped share in leading people to Christ today in the Livin It area.
- Within minutes of the event being canceled Luis was afforded the opportunity to record his message in a remote 94.9 KLTY FM studio. Luis was able to share biblical answers to why bad or disappointing things happen. In his powerful message Luis used the verse Romans 8:28 to give believers assurance that God had a purpose for this. He was then able to present the Gospel clearly to the audience via the radio. A rarity at best for this Salem station, maybe a first.

Today we are reminded of God’s great sovereignty. His ways are higher than our ways and I would ask that you pray for our staff, the KLTY staff (our radio station partner for the event), local teams and committees, and the executive board members who have tried for over two years to bring a great festival to their beloved city only to see weather interfere. In the end we can trust in knowing that all things work together for the good of those who love Him and we do rejoice in the many lives that were changed for eternity over the past two days. If only there was one, all the angels in heaven rejoice. We have much to rejoice tonight!!!

Friday Update of Celebrate Freedom from Duffy Johnson-Palau Festival Director

      <dc:subject>Andrew Palau News</dc:subject>

Howdy from the Big D! Here is an update from Duffy Johnson-Palau Festival Director

Day number 1 for Celebrate Freedom ’08 is in the books! With a day filled with 100 degree heat and gusting winds up to 30 miles a hour, it left our staff a little wind blown and sunburned. Fantastic performances were given by the BMX and Skate teams, unfortunately due to high winds the FMX guys were unable to give it a go (please pray for the temperature to be reasonable and the wind to die down so our guys can jump). Walls went up today for some Habitat for Humanity homes, rappers rapped, comedians produced laughter, and Family Fun Zone performers cheered, danced, and jump-roped for Jesus today. The many lives changed for Christ today provided a great start for our weekend! (Read on for some of the stories.)

Luis gave a great Gospel message today and stirred many hearts including:

A precious little 5/6 year old girl who had her eyes glued to Luis the entire message. When the audience prayed with Luis she joined in the concert of prayers. After the prayer was over she turned around and looked at her Daddy and said “Daddy, I did it, I prayed for Jesus to come into my heart.” The father beamed with joy as she made a decision for Christ to be her Lord and Savior.

A lady named Jamie whose brother committed suicide just a few weeks ago is having a hard time going to church after this tragic event. She had been wrestling with God knowing that her brother wasn’t a believer. She was having difficulty in dealing with his fate and God’s goodness. Tonight she found the hope that she had lost and kindled a friendship of a believer who committed to walk with her and be a friend/sister in Christ.

Thomas, an unemployed man who lost his job and moved here for a new start. After 5 months of not finding any work he was feeling hopeless, tonight he heard a Gospel that provide a hope and a future. He embraced this word from the Lord and tonight went home with a new found life and start, unlike what he ever thought it would be.

We have high hopes for a great tomorrow! Please keep the staff in your prayers to be encouraged as conditions onsite have been challenging as we are operating in a compact area and very windy conditions. Please pray that people will come out and invite their friends, that the Lord will be glorified in every aspect, and the Kingdom will be advanced.

2 Days to Go - Celebrate Freedom 2008

Update on 2008 Celebrate Freedom in Dallas (Frisco) Texas June 27th & 28th.

      <dc:subject>Andrew Palau News</dc:subject>

With just 2 days to go until the launch of the 2008 Celebrate Freedom in Frisco, Texas we’re thrilled to see tumbleweeds! Ok, we are not seeing literal tumbleweeds-(but this is Texas!) and after last years deluge of torrential rain with flooding - we’re mighty happy to have a little dust on our shoes-if you know what I mean! Put simply, we are praying that there isn’t any mud wrestling on the agenda this year. So far the forecast looks perfect!

The team is busily working onsite at the new location – Pizza Hut Park. If you’ve been a part of Celebrate Freedom previously, you know that for the past umpteen years it has been held at SouthFork Ranch. We love the ranch, but in an effort to be more centrally located (between Dallas & Fort Worth) our partner here in Dallas, KLTY is trying out Pizza Hut Park this year! We of course do new venues for Palau festivals constantly, but this is the first “stadium” event in quite a while, so we could use your prayers as we adjust and continue prep for the festival!

Duffy & Charis Johnson have done a fantastic job of navigating the partnership waters and moving everything to fruition. It has been amazing to watch this year speed by! This brings us to year two of this amazing partnership between 90 Days of Blessing, Global Day of Prayer, KLTY and our Palau team. Over 300 churches are on board this year and nearly 600 volunteers will help make all the ministry happen this Friday & Saturday! Plus, the 90 Days initiative of community service will continue on for a few more weeks following the festival!!

Lots more ‘behind the scenes’ activity has been happening to prep us for this event this weekend!

Tents are up all over the site

2,000 bleachers are standing tall in the Livin It area (surrounded by protective guard rails)

Thousands of feet of fencing outline the Family Fun Zone and parking lots

ALL of our supplies have been moved to the park

and banners are covering the site

Technically speaking, we are ahead of schedule with 2 ½ days left to go until the festival – it’s a great place to be in! Today we have youth groups finishing off setup by delivering boxes to tents, placing the flags on the field, and hanging signage. Thankfully, our new venue opened their doors to us 2 whole days earlier than we anticipated. It’s proved to be VERY helpful! However, soon this stadium will be overran with hundreds and thousands of people taking in over 40 musical performers, top pros in the action sports arena, a monster truck, stunt man Sammy Maloof, Bob & Larry from the Veggie Tales, dancers from all over Texas, Luis & Andrew and much much more!

Luis lands in the Dallas sunshine tomorrow and Andrew shortly thereafter. They both hit the ground running and would appreciate your prayers! Luis has the main stage as the evangelist just like last year! Andrew will be the main speaker in the Livin It Action Sports park and then later in the evening from the mainstage. Both are great opportunities for Andrew to share his story and a message just for Dallas!

Lastly, please be in prayer for our staff. So far, the spiritual attacks have been bouncing off of us as the Lord has answered prayers and given us the words and grace to deal with people and problems in a spirit of love and patience. As we are 2 days away from the festival at this point please join me in prayer that:

Our staff will use every opportunity and interaction to show the love of Christ

The Lord’s will and perfect plan be done – and that He give us the wisdom and discernment to distinguish between HIS interruptions of our plans to make them HIS plans and the enemy’s roadblocks to interrupt our plans.

Our staff will remain healthy and our bodies unaffected by the stress we’re putting on them (no sunburns, injury, dehydration, or sickness)

Everyone will have safe travels coming in to DFW

Thanks for your faithfulness...we appreciate you standing in prayer with us to see all that the Lord will do in and though us this amazing weekend of ministry!

And for fun...Charis sent this poem out last week and I thought you’d appreciate the humor...and the appropriateness of festival life.

“Twas the week before the Festival”
By: Charis Johnson
‘Twas the week before the festival, when all through the city
Not a creature was still, there was no time for pity;
15 billboards were hung by the highways with care,
In hopes that Luis Palau soon would be there;

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of the Festival danced in their heads;
Charis in her kerchief, and Duffy in his cap,
Only wish they could hide and take a quick nap,

When there on the radio arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my desk to see what was the matter.
“Celebrate Freedom is here!” announced the news flash,
“Like nothing that has ever been done in the past”.
Announced twice an hour – wouldn’t you know
The announcements came during every DJ’s show!

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But commercials on CBS 11, our TV premiere!
With a handsome young director, so lively and quick,
The Dallas team went after grassroots with a banner and stick

More rapid than last year’s rain fell - they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called partners by name;
“Now, VERIZON! now, CARE NOW! now, CHIC-FIL-A go!
On, CAPTIAL ONE! on CB AUTO! Too many to know!
500 tickets were printed – thousands that would be (500,000)

The 375,000 magazine ads are a sight to see
And then, in a twinkling, they appeared all around
56 banners covered the North Texas ground
Emails went out - and counselors poured in

Thank God for the 500 volunteers to take care of them!
The events—how they twinkled! The VIP how merry!
10 articles, 3 papers, the press did not weary!
We continued to pray for no rain and no snow
You never can guess Texas weather you know;

We spoke not a word, but kept straight to our work,
Replying to email, when Charis turned with a jerk
And laying a finger on the calendar and date
Smiled when she realized they would not be late

Duffy sprang to his golf cart, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
“TO THE GLORY OF GOD, WORK WITH ALL OF YOUR MIGHT.”

BeachFest in Myrtle Beach, SC is over and it was a great week of ministry in the beautiful sunshine.

      <dc:subject>Andrew Palau News</dc:subject>

The first Andrew Palau festival held in the United States was a big success! More than 19,000 attended activities for the two-day BeachFest on June 13-14 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. And more than 500 public decisions for Jesus Christ were made! Top artists in contemporary Christian music performed from the main stage, including TobyMac, MercyMe, Mandisa and Hawk Nelson along with local worship leaders Russell and Kristi Johnson and international artist from the UK Lindz West. The 55-acre site also offered a massive Livin It action sports venue, a Family Fun Zone with VeggieTales characters, plenty of food and drink options, and surfing clinics held each morning by top pros Jesse Hines and Noah Snyder. The weather was hot but thunderstorm-free. Check out the images from the festival by clicking on the link in the upper right corner of this page.

June 15 Beachfest Update

We want to share a couple of stories from decision cards that have been turned in.

      <dc:subject>BeachFest</dc:subject>

Andrew celebrated Fathers Day this morning speaking at Grace Church in Pawleys Island. Grace Church and it’s pastor Tim Surratt provided a major support to the team. Andrew, Wendy and the kids are spending some much earned and deserved time together the next couple of days here in Myrtle Beach before returning to Portland. Beachfest wrapped up last night and our team is feverishly wrapping up things at the site and collecting stories of lives changed. I’d like to share a couple of stories from decision cards that have been turned in.

Joseph, who is on vacation with his family, made a decision for Christ and his Mom also rededicated her life to the Lord.

A man named Trey said “I love that I got to see this, it revived my kinship with God.”

A man who was new to Myrtle Beach was brought by a neighbor in his building and gave his heart to the Lord.

A comment on the back of one card filled out by someone who had just recommitted their life to God simply read “coming back!!!!!!”

There were so many more stories we heard throughout the week that we hope to share in the future. It was amazing to see lives and hearts change through the power of the Holy Spirit and the efforts of so many local Myrtle Beachers. Praise God to whom all glory and honor is due!

BeachFest: Rocking the Beach

BeachFest with Andrew Palau officially opened day 2 under a cloudy sky, quickly turning hot! Hundreds crowded around to see Livin It demos, and many more enjoyed a family fun zone. Mainstage lineup includes local worship leaders Russell and Kristi Johnson, Lindz West, Mandisa and TobyMac plus a message of Good News from Andrew Palau.

      <dc:subject>BeachFest</dc:subject>

Beachfest officially opened day 2 under a cloudy sky. Thankfully, by 8:30 am almost all the thunderheads had pushed back from the coast, revealing another beautiful, sunny, and HOT day! People crowded in to enjoy this mornings’ surf clinic with appearances and instruction from surf pros Noah Snyder and Jesse Hines.

Taking advantage of a beautiful Saturday and a highlight from the morning edition cover of the Sun Times local paper, more than 200 people made their way down to the beach to learn how to surf. It was amazing as the guys shared their hearts and their testimonies and of course taught the crowd how to “walk on water”. Listeners hung on every word - it was incredible. Check out the pictures! Andrew and Wendy even took their kiddos down to the beach to “rip” up the waves too.

The festival grounds started to fill in much earlier than yesterday, as hundreds of people crowded around to take in the incredible Livin It demonstrations. We’ve got the cream of the crop here in Myrtle Beach! Our pros include faithful standby Jud Heald and his “untitled” skate team.

You can catch Mike Mancuso’s ProTown BMX team next week on NBC’s Dew Tour - yes, they’re that good! The Riders For Christ FMX team featured Greg Hartman, the 2007 X Games Dubai Gold medalist.

I’m sure that demo had mammas in the stands catching their breath (probably praying that their kids wouldn’t take up doing crazy tricks 30 feet in the air!) It was a great Livin It Action Sports park and many hands were raised during the counseling time making all their efforts of sweatin’ it out in the sun worthwhile.

Man, tonight’s mainstage lineup was awesome! Local musicians Russel and Kristi Johnson established the spirit for the evening with a great worship set. Then Lindz West our emcee (and resident rock star) slammed the house. Both nights he had the crowd jumping all over the place “raising the roof.” Lindz has a band in the UK named LZ7 and has become a festival favorite with the fans. Then our gal Mandisa rolled out her set with the old Diana Ross tune I’m Every Woman. Man, that girl has some pipes! After covering some fun tunes, she belted out her own chart-toppers and then pointed it all back to Jesus breaking into a moving worship moment.

Andrew took the stage next and instantly engaged the crowd. The level of attention that Andrew commanded was inspiring. The staggering (as Luis always says) decision to accept Jesus as their personal savior was made by many. Only the Lord knows the full impact of a festival in the hearts of man. Andrew delivered a solid message of truth and as promised, the word did not return void as the highly engaged crowd responded in droves. After a sweet time of prayer led by Andrew, the counselors worked with the individuals that had responded for several moments.

To close out the night, TobyMac was “freaking out” on stage and the crowds loved every minute of it! If you weren’t here… there is just no other way to say it… you totally missed it!

I know many of our friends from past festivals are visiting this site to see what’s happening in Andrew’s ministry. You may have lived the moments we’ve encountered tonight. Can’t you just hear Toby’s band bringing it all back to Him? Sweetly singing How Great Thou Art?

Tonight, it literally resonated throughout the Grand Strand. Lives were drastically changed this weekend. We’ve already got stories in that are simply mind boggling. The Lord even used the festival to reach a man staying at a hotel across the street in an amazing way. He heard the music and considering jumping from the balcony and ending it all, made his way over to the festival where he invited Jesus into his heart. The harvest is great - but the workers are few! Make your plans to be a part of upcoming festival now!

Thanks for your partnership of prayers, finances and for making an eternal investment of souls into the kingdom! We here on the Myrtle Beach/Andrew Palau team appreciate your support! Hopefully, we’ll see you soon!

Beachfest officially opened at 8:00 AM under a brilliant blue sky with a professional surfing clinic followed in the afternoon by Livin It demonstrations, kids and sports zones and an evening mainstage lineup including local worship leaders Russell and Kristy Johnson, Lindz West, Hawk Nelson and Mercy Me plus a message of Good News from Andrew.

For a day that had been forecast earlier in the week to be rainy, the blue skies and relatively pleasant temperatures were an early sign of answered prayers. The Luis Palau Association has not had the first day of a festival on a Friday for some time and the crowd was definitely late in arriving. By the time Mercy Me wrapped things up though, there were many thousands of people singing Amazing Grace along with the band. It was fitting as it was a day that in the end was truly amazing and full of Grace. Over the course of the day we saw 7500 people come to the site and many documented decisions were made (we’re still processing the decision cards and will have numbers by Monday). Praise God!

Andrew and his sons Christopher and Jonathan were picked up early by co-chairman Bayliss Spivey to go down to the surf clinic put on by Jesse Hines and several pro surfers. The Surfers gave quick lessons to those on the beach who were interested in learning to surf, including Andrew and the boys who all got up on their boards and rode some waves. It was a great morning of interaction and ministry as the Gospel was shared.

Later in the evening, Andrew brought his entire family on stage, introducing them to the crowd. He talked about adoption and encouraged the crowd to check out the ministries who had set up displays in a large tent on the festival site including America World Adoption Agency, the agency that he and Wendy used in adopting their daughter Sadie.

Andrew introduced Lindz West, our emcee and member of the British band LZ7. Lindz performed a couple of LZ7’s songs and got the crowd fired up for Hawk Nelson. We were blessed to have such great bands, including Russell and Kristi, all of which set up Andrew’s message well.

Andrew acknowledged the crowd and those who are in Myrtle Beach to celebrate their High School graduation by partying spring break style. He talked about his high school years and how his poor choices then led to many years of heartache and guilt. He shared the Good News asking for people to make a decision to follow Christ and many responded.

A local student who made a decision to follow Christ wrote a note on his decision card saying he wasn’t going to come tonight but “God made me.” Another local resident was so moved by Andrew’s message that she raised her hand to rededicate her life to Christ. Another girl who rededicated her life tonight was in Myrtle Beach on a missions trip from Nebraska, re-affirming our hope that a festival in Myrtle Beach could reach many people from all over the US who may be here on vacation or otherwise. What a blessing.

It was so great to have a band like Mercy Me close out the night. Many of the response cards turned in indicated that the reason the person came was to see Mercy Me. We were thankful that the band was able to make this night fit on their schedule and we were blessed to be able to partner with them tonight.

Tomorrow should prove to be another great day as the temperatures are only supposed to reach the mid-80’s, it will be a Saturday and we will have another great lineup of bands with Mandissa and TobyMac joining in the fun. Please continue to pray for many to come and that they would give their hearts to God. Also, that those who came tonight would bring friends back tomorrow.

A summary of BeachFest with Andrew Palau in Myrtle Beach, SC June 13 & 14th, 2008. 2pm-10pm.

      <dc:subject>BeachFest, Andrew Palau News</dc:subject>

Just wanted to check in and tell you all thanks for your prayers! We are feeling your faithfulness! Despite lots of the team encountering flight delays, lost luggage, weird illnesses and the like… I think the last of them finally should be touching down or are on the mend now! Andrew’s first official US festival is HERE!

Just a few short hours ago, Andrew hosted an intimate appreciation gathering for the donors where he spoke words of hope and encouragement over them. It was moving as each of the chairs shared their hearts for this community and how God has already used the festival to work in their own lives albeit mostly through tears. Andrew maintained his composure (most of the time), but joked he was going to take festival chairman Mark Kiskunas on the road with him full time to help downplay his own tears. I personally love our sensitive men and their tender hearts. If the Lord is leading you, there is still time for you to financially support BeachFest. I know we have a tad bit more to raise to fulfill the budget and you can donate online if you’d like to help support this incredible outreach in Myrtle Beach, SC.

As for the build out… everyone has stepped up to the plate to pull it all together (with the Lords help of course) and it’s an honor to be a part of such a well knit team! We kick off tomorrow morning with a surf demo from 8am-12pm and then the festival site starts to roll at 2pm. Keep praying for the weather (still looking good!), the athletes, the staff, volunteers and of course the attendees-that all would be encouraged and those that need Christ would find him before the setting of the sun.

Pre-festival buzz is going strong, so we are praying for a great festival with a great harvest! Everyone is playing vital roles to get the word out. From churches, radio partners, sponsors, and the like, the word is on the street! Plus, the media has been very generous to us so far. This is largely due to Craig Chastains’ excellent PR work* for the first BeachFest in 2002 & SummerFest in 2004. Thankfully we had news coverage on all three local tv newscasts (ABC, CBS & FOX) yesterday at 12, 5 & 6pm. Then the Sun Times sported 2 different stories on the front page! Nice pieces which you can read online here for the lead story and here for the business story (both made the cover along with a helpful site map!) Praise the Lord!

This afternoon Andrew met with reporter Rebecca Carter from Channel 13 (CBS) onsite. It made a nice featurette on CBS & Fox news tonight (both the 6p and 11p newscasts). Keep asking for favor in this department — it helps extend the reach into the community!

Just remember He is doing a great work here in the Grand Strand and you are a part of it through your prayers, your financial support and your encouragement. Thanks again for your faithfulness… Please keep lifting us up!

Until all have heard,
Holly

June 12 update on world evangelist Andrew Palau's BeachFest in Myrtle Beach, SC, on June 13-14

      <dc:subject>BeachFest, Andrew Palau News</dc:subject>

After a full week of setup and activities we are finally down to our last day of preparation for the festival! God has (as always) been so good to us! We are STOKED to see all that the Lord will do in this community through the churches, media and of course, Andrew! So far it has been simply amazing to watch Him work in this coastal community. Andrew has been a pro — knocking out interviews, meetings with the local team and even going above and beyond and last night even sported a pie in the face at a youth event… all in the name of Jesus.

Yesterday we held a press conference for Andrew which was the first “official” activity onsite. Thankfully, ABC, CBS & Fox all had videographers present which ran stories at 12, 5 & 6 regarding the festival. Shortly after that wrapped, we raced off to do a TV taping for a local show called RiverTalk with Jack Murphy.
On the way up both Andrew and Jim Keen (Festival Director) fielded interview questions from the Sun Times for two different articles (talk about maximizing time!) Check out the results here and here.

By the time we wrapped the RiverTalk shoot and returned to the site, the stage had been raised sporting Andrews’ brand new stage header. It looks sharp and I think honors the Lord with excellence! Another local reporter came out and took some shots of the setup efforts. Everything is coming together thanks in part by your support and prayers - keep them coming!

In the evening Andrew and our emcee Lindz West were at Carolina Forrest Community Church to share with 650 kindergarten to 5th grade kids and their parents. CFCC runs the program Nick At Night each Wednesday night in June and it is truly a sight to behold. Andrew and Lindz joined several teams for wild and messy games on the field. Andrew was both slimed and potatoed before being rinsed off with a fire hose. It was a great night and a lot of fun.

The whole teams’ spirits are high and the 99º+ heat wave of last week has ebbed to a tolerable hot. Forecast calls for sunshine in the upper 80’s for the weekend which would be absolutely perfect! Volunteers and team members from around the country have finally landed despite cancelled flights, long layovers and lost luggage. Be praying for the team as we finalize all the things that need to be accomplished before the gates open tomorrow. Also pray for Andrew for strength and favor with this community and that we have a lasting impact locally and beyond! In 2002 some 20+ states were represented on decision cards! Also, our athletes start early in the morning too… cover them with prayers for safety and effectiveness! Thanks for your support & check back for more updates! Eric and Doug should have some new photos going up soon. Be blessed! — Holly
